UNC basketball reaches out to newly eligible center

Friday was a monumental day as a Colorado judge granted an extra year of eligibility for college athletes who graduated from high school in 2022. As part of the 5-for-5 ruling, those athletes are now granted that extra year when it looked like they had exhausted it.

Now, programs are scrambling to see which athletes are available for the extra year and the potential to add to their roster. That includes North Carolina.
Per a report from Tar Heel 247, the Tar Heels contacted Cameron Fens right away after the ruling as he is one of the athletes granted an extra year. Fens is a seven-foot center who is from Dubuque, Iowa, and played college at UIC for two seasons and then his last two at South Dakota.
With UNC having a need for some size in the frontcourt at the center position, it makes sense to reach out to someone like Fens for an extra year.
North Carolina wasn't the only program to do so, however. The report states that there were other programs already involved with Fens, giving UNC some competition.
For now, the pursuit is on for the Tar Heels. How far it goes is still to be determined.
