Dolphins coach uses fitting words to describe Jacob Rodriguez in camp

The Miami Dolphins have held three practice sessions to start training camp at their Baptist Health Training Complex, and while all three of them have been with limited contact and without pads, there are a few players bringing the juice.

Among those players is rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who the Dolphins took in the second round of the 2026 NFL draft out of Texas Tech, where he earned All-Big 12 honors twice and All-American honors once.
Before Sunday's session, which is the first open to the public, Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley evaluated Jacob Rodriguez's start to camp with some fitting descriptors.
"He's violent, right?" Hafley asked the local media Sunday morning. "He's got a really good knack for getting the ball out. A lot of guys would throw punches and miss and hit ribs and hit the back and hit shoulder pads. They're trying to get the ball out. He's got a really good feel, and he's got really good timing, and he's very instinctual. I mean, [De'Vone] Achane, there was one a couple of practices ago where Achane actually had two hands on the ball, and Jacob came in and, I mean, it was a violent punch, and the ball came out. I think Achane even kind of smacked him on the back and was like, 'That was a heck of a punch.' Now, Achane's gotta hold onto the ball, but I don't know who would've been able to hold onto the ball with that (punch).
"But you can see, even running sideline-to-sideline, he's constantly taking swings at it. They're very deliberate. I just think he's got really good width and range, and in zone coverage, he's got the ability to get up and get his hands on the football, so that's what you're probably seeing, but he's done a nice job so far."
Rodriguez entered training camp as the third linebacker behind Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson, but if he's forcing turnovers, as he did last year when he set the NCAA record for forced fumbles in a season with seven, it's going to be hard to keep him off of the field for most of the plays.
