Alcantara Makes History, Marlins Earn First Series Win in 20 Days

Kyle Stowers’ solo home run in the first inning was all the Marlins needed offensively to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on Tuesday at loanDepot park.
The Miami first baseman took a 77.3 mph knuckle curve from Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola deep for a 390-foot solo home run in the Marlins’ second at-bat of the game.
It was Stowers' second home run of the six-game, six-day homestand, when he went deep in Sunday's series finale against the San Diego Padres.
It marked Miami's first series win since July 8 at home, where the Marlins (54-54) would go on to complete a three-game sweep over the Seattle Mariners.
The Phillies (57-51), have lost seven of their last 10 games, but remain in the second National League wild card spot with a 1.5 game lead.
Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara turned in an excellent start Tuesday, holding the Phillies to four hits over seven scoreless innings.
Alcantara was recognized on the jumbotron before the start of the eighth inning after setting the Marlins' franchise record with his 111th career quality start.
He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before former Marlins outfielder Bryan De La Cruz, the only Phillies player to finish with a multi-hit game against Alcantara, beat out an infield single.
After the game, Alcantara met with reporters, discussing his record and calling it “another record” while expressing his gratitude for his tenure with the organization.
Despite having his name involved in trade talks in 2025 and again this season, Alcantara has remained laser-focused, consistently putting the Marlins in position to win every fifth day he takes the mound.
Reliever Calvin Faucher needed just nine pitches to retire the side in order in the eighth inning. Faucher has now recorded four consecutive scoreless appearances dating back to July 22 against the Houston Astros.
Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks, who has endured a bumpy 2026 season, recorded his 14th save with the club by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
What once was a frustrating 12-game losing streak that felt like, at times, it would never end, the Marlins now have a multi-game winning streak and have climbed back to the .500 mark 108 games into the season.
The Marlins will look to complete the three-game sweep Wednesday at 12:10 p.m. ET, with right-hander Ryan Gusto (0-2, 4.50 ERA) taking the mound opposite former Marlins left-hander Jesús Luzardo (9-5, 3.31 ERA), who is 2-0 this season against his former club.
Manager Clayton McCullough did not say whether Gusto, who last pitched July 24 against the Padres, will be on a pitch count or who will follow him out of the bullpen.
