Police officers in New York City used drones to catch teenagers subway surfing on top of a train in Brooklyn last week, officials said.

Five boys, ranging from 12 to 15, were arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and trespassing, the NYPD said. Drone footage shows several people on top of the roof of a speeding train on Monday, July 20. Two suspects jumped off the train and then climbed over the fence and into a backyard. They reached a sidewalk and were quickly arrested by officers.
“On Monday, NYPD drones assisted officers in safely removing five teens who were subway surfing,” police wrote on Facebook . “Two days later, a 16-year-old was critically injured for the same dangerous stunt. If you see someone subway surfing, call 911.”

MTA key
Police said one teenager had an MTA key, which can open locked cab doors or sidewalk hatches giving people access into the underground system. A report by local news site Gothamist said since 2023, 76 people had keys while they were subway surfing, either buying fake ones online or stealing them from MTA officials.
Girl, 16, badly hurt
In another incident, a 16-year-old girl was seriously hurt on July 23 while subway surfing in Queens, N.Y. According to witnesses, She climbed on top of a subway train but slammed into a beam as the train went under an overpass. Ten minutes went by before she received help because firefighters had to wait for the MTA to cut the power to the third rail so they could get to her. Luckily, the girl only went to hospital with a broken leg.
