According to an Eskom Connect notice for the Gauteng Cluster, the outage is necessary to carry out emergency maintenance on the area’s distribution network. The power utility says the work is essential to keep the electricity infrastructure functioning reliably going forward.
Eskom: Which areas and when
The interruption will affect customers in Meadowlands Zones 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 on Friday, 31 July, from 9:30 to 19:00, for approximately 9.5 hours. Eskom says the outage is required to perform essential work on the area’s distribution power lines.
With power expected to switch on and off unpredictably during maintenance work, Eskom has urged customers to treat all electrical appliances and wiring as live at all times throughout the interruption, even if the power appears to be off.
The utility apologised for the inconvenience the maintenance may cause and thanked affected customers for their cooperation.
Safety comes first
Eskom has strongly urged customers to treat all electrical appliances and household wiring as live throughout the outage period, regardless of whether the power appears to be off. This precaution is standard practice during maintenance work, since power can be restored unexpectedly or fluctuate as technicians test different sections of the network.
As with all planned maintenance notices, Eskom has cautioned that circumstances beyond its control could affect the timeline. This means the outage could potentially be extended, delayed, or altered depending on how the repair work unfolds on site, and residents are encouraged to keep an eye on further updates from Eskom.
