Daily Snow Report: Snow is on its way!

South Africa starts the week cold and increasingly wet on Monday, 27 July, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a yellow level 1 warning for damaging coastal wind and waves between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas, while an advisory points to snowfall returning to the high-lying Eastern Cape and southern Free State from Tuesday.
That’s a shift from the calmer, warning-free stretch most provinces enjoyed a week ago, with this cold system now bringing wind, rain and the real possibility of snow back into the picture over the coming days.

Daily Snow Report: Fine weather in the interior, wet conditions moving in along the coast
According to SAWS, Gauteng will see morning frost in places, otherwise fine and cool, with Mpumalanga much the same but warm in the Lowveld, and Limpopo fine and cool to warm.
The North West stays fine and cool with morning frost in the south, the Free State fine and cool with morning frost in places, and the Northern Cape fine and cool to warm, though cold and partly cloudy in the south.
The Western Cape turns cloudy and cold over the south coast and adjacent interior from the afternoon, with isolated showers and rain. Winds reach near gale along the south-west coast.
The Eastern Cape’s western half starts fine before turning cloudy and cool with isolated showers along the coast. The eastern half stays fine and cool to warm, becoming cloudy with evening showers south of the escarpment.
KwaZulu-Natal stays fine and cool to warm before turning partly cloudy with isolated showers in the south-east. The UVB sunburn index is very high.
Western Cape coast under a wind and wave warning
The only impact-based warning in effect today covers the Western Cape coastline, where SAWS flags:
- Difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels and personal watercraft
- Localised disruption to beachfront activities
- Wind reaching near gale along the south-west coast from the afternoon
The warning runs between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas through Monday and Tuesday.
Snow expected Tuesday and Wednesday for the Eastern Cape and Free State
Unlike recent days, SAWS has issued a direct advisory for snow this time.
Very cold and wet conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, with snowfall forecast over the high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape, especially the Maloti-Drakensberg range, and the southern parts of the Free State and the Lesotho border. Farmers in these areas are advised to take precautionary measures against the adverse conditions.
This follows the same pattern we’ve tracked in our earlier Snow Report coverage. The Drakensberg and Lesotho border consistently prove the most reliable spots for snow each time a cold front pushes through. Forecasters continue to monitor how far this system extends over the coming days.
