On his Facebook page this week, former Springbok star and one-time South African rugby ‘poster boy’ Derick Hougaard shared that he was “in big trouble” and desperately looking for a way to “sort out the crisis that is paralysing me”.

Although the 43-year-old didn’t go into any specifics about his latest troubles, it has understandably raised concerns about his wellbeing, especially considering his tumultuous history since hanging up his boots.

The Rise to Fame & Rugby Heights (2002–2007)
- 2002 – Breaking Naas Botha’s Record: At just 19 years old, Hougaard announced himself on the big stage by scoring 26 points (a try, two drop goals, and five penalties) for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup final victory against the Golden Lions. This broke Naas Botha’s 15-year-old record for most points in a Currie Cup final and earned him the beloved moniker “Liefling van Loftus”.
- 2003 – Test Debut & Brian Lima Tackle: Debuted for the Springboks at age 20 during the 2003 Rugby World Cup against Uruguay. In the same tournament against Samoa, he famously absorbed a massive, bone-crunching tackle from Brian “The Chiropractor” Lima that remains one of rugby’s most iconic hits.
- 2007 – Super Rugby Glory: Delivered one of his signature career performances in the Super 14 semi-final against the Crusaders, scoring all 27 of the Bulls’ points (eight penalties and a drop goal). LATEST CONCERN
In the latest concerning public cry for help, Derick Hougaard has now stated on Facebook: “I am in big trouble. Impossible maybe. Just a miracle will work. What to do. And who these days will just help you for the fact of just helping. In numbers, anything is possible”.
He added: “I just pray for God’s favour over my life. I am just looking for a new beginning and a challenge. And I thought maybe you could help. This is really me posting
