Juan Soto left the Mets’ 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday during the sixth inning with soreness in his left calf, according to the team. Soto batted twice in the game and drew two walks before leaving for pinch-hitter Jorge Polanco.

Afterwards, Mets interim manager Andy Green told reporters (including ESPN’s Jorge Castillo) that Soto felt an issue while running the bases and will undergo an MRI exam on his left calf on Saturday. He conceded that the star outfielder could go on the injured list.

Prior to the game, Green said that the calf was still an issue for Soto but he could still continue to play. Unfortunately, he also said that he hoped Soto’s calf wouldn’t be a subject with reporters anymore.

“It’s improving for him,” Green said, via MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. “Hopefully after today, we don’t have to talk about it anymore.”

Soto, 27, went on the injured list in early April with a right calf strain and was sidelined for two weeks. He has been struggling with discomfort in his left calf recently and sat out Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers because of it.

For the past seven games, Soto has started at designated hitter, rather than his customary right field, in hopes of reducing stress on that calf.

Despite the injury, Soto has a slash line of .283/.404/.539 this season in 357 plate appearances and leads the Mets with 21 home runs and 52 RBI. His .404 on-base percentage is best in the National League and he’s tied for second in MLB with a .947 OPS.

Friday’s defeat dropped the Mets’ record to 43-61 and they currently hold last place in the NL East. They have lost four of seven games since the All-Star break and are 7-11 in July.
