Trade season hasn't started a bit early for the Houston Astros.

While Houston hasn't shown any indication that it's going to blow things up at the deadline, it did trade a bullpen piece away on Wednesday. Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported that Houston is trading veteran reliever Nate Pearson to the Kansas City Royals. Jon Heyman of The New York Post followed up and reported that pitching prospect Max Martin is coming back to Houston in exchange.

"The Astros are trading reliever Nate Pearson to the Kansas City Royals, sources tell The Athletic," Rome wrote. 

"Nate Pearson goes to Royals from Astros for pitching prospect Max Martin," Heyman wrote on X. 

Before the trade, Pearson appeared in 16 games with the Astros in the majors this season and logged a 3.60 ERA. His last appearance was two weeks ago on July 8. Pearson is a six-year big league veteran with a 4.99 career ERA in 139 total appearances with the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and the Astros.

For the Royals, this is a solid move, although a bit surprising. Pearson has one more season of team control left in 2027 and then will be a free agent afterward. The reason why it's surprising is that the Royals have simply had a bad season so far. The Royals are 42-60 and yet they are adding a piece. Pearson isn't very expensive and does have a year of control left, but certainly a surprising move.
