OUR SELECTIONS

Ken Jordan, winner of 2024 Belmont Stakes Challenge; top 10 finish NTRA National Horseplayers Championship in March

2. Further Ado: Derby favorite recovered from a rough trip there to dominate the Matt Winn Stakes, pace-presser only needs a clean trip here.

5. Iron Honor: Hung badly in Preakness, can sit off the pacesetters and we will see if he's learned to finish

7. Ocelli: Picked for third, because why not?

6. Napoleon Solo: Preakness winner and probable pacesetter will try to take them all the way. Paco's recent run-in with stewards will probably limit herding or drifting in the stretch.

Sean Nolan, 21-time National Horseplayers Championship qualifier

6. Napoleon Solo toyed with the Preakness field while going a longer distance. Trio of fast works signals he is on his game.

4. The Puma fires his shot every race. Fresh colt figures to be close to the pace. Will give the top choice a battle in the lane.

3. Baby Vino is rapidly improving and has shown a strong late kick in his last two races. Gets new pilot in Vargas. A patient ride gives the Schultz trainee a chance to blow up the tote board.

6. Napoleon Solo: Monmouth Park on Haskell Day is traditionally speed-favoring. The prospect of rain and an off track also could make for a speed-favoring track. The Preakness winner is the main speed goes wire-to-wire. The last two races he has been involved in have come back live, especially the Wood Memorial, where he ran fifth.

4. The Puma: He was a wise guy horse in the Kentucky Derby off the very good second he had in the Florida Derby before he had to be scratched due to a leg injury. He has been pointed to this race ever since he returned to training. He does have a win over morning line favorite Further Ado in the Tampa Derby. He may need a race though coming off the 3 1/2 month layoff.

2. Further Ado: He has by far the fastest Beyer Speed Figure in the race with the 106 he ran in his romp in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland in early April. He was the Kentucky Derby favorite and then ran 11th after a troubled trip. His four wins (two at Keeneland and two at Churchill Downs) have come in Kentucky. He is 0-for-3 outside Kentucky.

5. Iron Honor: He can turn the tables on Napoleon Solo, who beat him in the Preakness. It was tough to close at Laurel that day, and Iron Honor put in a good run from off the pace. He won't have to be so far back today, and is only making his fifth career start, all since December.

4. The Puma: He was a sneaky Kentucky Derby horse after a very tough trip with a wide and early move in the Florida Derby. Unfortunately, a leg injury forced him to miss the Derby. He's back now and if he runs back to his last race off the 3 1/2 month layoff, he'll be tough.

6. Napoleon Solo: He ran well to win the Preakness after getting caught in a devastating speed duel in the Wood Memorial. He can certainly win, and will likely be in front early, but will be a shorter price than our top pick.

Bob Jordan, Asbury Park Press sports editor

4. The Puma: Regular rider Javier Castellano is sidelined by injury and Luis Saez is up. American Pharoah, Good Magic and Geaux Rocket Ride were Haskell winners after long breaks.

5. Iron Honor: For a minute he looked like he was going to get to Napoleon Solo in the Preakness.

7. Orcelli: The new maiden money-winning king, a title previously held by Nationalore, who never did win in 26 tries.

2. Further Ado: Favorites have won 12 of the last 21 Haskell (57%).
