Yankees announce rehab assignment plan for Max Fried

· Yahoo Sports

The New York Yankees are one step closer to getting one of their most important players back. The club announced that injured left-hander Max Fried will begin a rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The current expectation is that Fried will make two or three rehab starts before being activated from the injured list. If everything goes according to plan, Fried’s return could significantly alter the Yankees’ approach ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

Rotation About to Get a Major Boost

Fried has been sidelined for more than two months, leaving a noticeable hole in New York’s starting rotation. His return would provide the Yankees with another frontline starter as they prepare for the second half of the season and what they hope will be a deep postseason run.

After being the ace of the staff in 2025, Fried was expected to be a key piece of the rotation when the season began, and getting him back healthy could be just as valuable as making a major trade acquisition.

That’s why the organization will likely take a cautious approach during his rehab assignment before bringing him back to the major league roster.

Trade Deadline Plans Could Change

For weeks, the Yankees have been connected to several starting pitchers on the trade market. However, Fried’s impending return may cause the front office to rethink those plans.

If he looks healthy over his rehab starts, New York may no longer view starting pitching as one of its biggest priorities. Instead, general manager Brian Cashman could shift his focus toward strengthening other areas of the roster that still need attention.

The Yankees still have several holes to address before the trade deadline.

Other Needs Are More Pressing

Adding a catcher and another high-leverage relief pitcher remains among the club’s biggest priorities. The team could also pursue an impact outfielder, particularly if Aaron Judge’s recovery timeline extends longer than expected. With Giancarlo Stanton also unavailable, another right-handed power bat could become a necessity.

There’s even more encouraging news on the pitching front, as Carlos Rodón is reportedly not far behind Fried in his recovery timeline. If both starters return healthy over the next few weeks, the Yankees could suddenly have one of the deepest rotations in baseball without needing to sacrifice prospects in a trade.

That would give the front office the flexibility to focus its resources on improving the lineup and bullpen, potentially putting New York in an even stronger position for the stretch run.
