Dodgers Provide Concerning Update on Will Smith’s Injury Status

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith’s neck injury has lingered far beyond what team officials expected, and on Friday, manager Dave Roberts confirmed that fans’ worst fears could be true.

Smith initially tried to play through the pain, which was diagnosed as disc inflammation.

In early June, though, he was put on the 10-day injured list to allow him to heal.

Early estimates for his return were just a few days, then by the All-Star break, then shortly after the All-Star break.

On Friday, though, Roberts admitted that every timeline put forward thus far may have been overly optimistic.

When could Will Smith return from injury?

Roberts told Dodgers Nation’s Noel Sanchez and other reporters ahead of the series against the New York Yankees that it’s possible Smith misses the rest of the 2026 season.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Smith seemed to be progressing, having begun throwing and hitting in the batting cage again.

During that resumption, though, Smith never felt better, Roberts told reporters.

“To be honest with you right now, I think that he’s taking a week — at least a week — of just really doing no activity to hopefully calm his neck down to then build up,” Roberts said. “Early on, we’ve been trying to get him ready, moving around, doing some baseball stuff, but he hasn’t been able to get over the hump. So no activity, then we’ll kind of read-react after a week.”

With that change to his recovery plan, Smith won’t be back until at least August.

That timeline means Smith will miss a minimum of two months of action this season.

“However you want to word it, he didn’t feel like he was making any improvement,” Roberts said.

When will Will Smith resume baseball activities?

Roberts said “the hope” is that Smith is back to baseball activities by the end of next week.

“That kind of comes with consecutive days of feeling better. It’s going to be a slow ramp up. Honestly, I don’t know what that really looks like right now. It’s hard to say.”
