According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Donald is still in the process of making his decision on whether or not he'll return to the league. And, Rapoport added, a decision may not even happen until training camp or right before the 2026 season begins.

"A real possibility is probably a pretty good way to describe it. My understanding is Aaron Donald himself does not really know right now whether this is going to happen," Rapoport said. "If he does show up, it would probably even be to the end of training camp or maybe even be — could even be into the season, because he's not going to be playing 50 or 60 plays on defense, he'd be more of a spot guy. But yes, Aaron Donald does seem to be exploring this possibility."

The update follows a viral moment from July 10, when video surfaced of Donald running through drills at the Rams' Woodland Hills facility. ESPN's Adam Schefter later confirmed the session was a self-directed trial, with Donald telling the team he wanted to work out and gauge how his body responded to being back in pads. Schefter said Donald spent roughly an hour on the field completing agility and explosive drills.

This speculation around a potential Donald return three seasons after he retired isn't new, but it's gained a lot of momentum this offseason after the Rams' offseason addition of Myles Garrett, the NFL's active sacks leader. Pairing Garrett with a returning Donald would give Los Angeles a Hall of Fame-caliber duo anchoring its defensive front.

For now, it sounds like Donald is no further to returning than he was when rumors started to swirl weeks ago. And while the possibility seems to be greater than it was, it may still be some time before the NFL and the Rams know for sure if Donald will play a snap in 2026.
