In a note to the team on Instagram, the future king said he was "gutted" by the Three Lions' loss to Argentina in the World Cup semifinals on Wednesday, July 14. England had a 1-0 lead after 84 minutes, only to concede two goals and lose 2-1.
Argentina will play Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday while England will play France in the third-place game the day before.
"Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you. Thank you to everyone, on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament," Prince William's message read. "The fight and belief you have shown have inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high."
Prince William closed the message with an England flag emoji and a W, signifying he wrote the message himself.
Prince William has made no secret of his love for soccer and was the longtime head of England's Football Association. He is now patron of the FA, but has continued to be an active advocate for the game in England and the country's national teams.
