Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James’ future has been up in the air as LeBron James makes his decision on where to play, but it might have gotten clearer.

Bronny, who has been quietly improving in the G-League and even cracked the postseason rotation, remains in the shadow of his father, for better or worse.
LeBron is intent on playing NBA basketball for at least another year, and it will not be with the Lakers, his franchise home for eight years.
Naturally, Bronny is seemingly left in an awkward spot, with his dad choosing to leave his current team and ending, at least for the time being, the father-son duo that has caught the eye of many.

While many, from the outset, expected the Lakers to either trade or outright release Bronny so he can join his dad, a new report indicated that may not be the case
“While LeBron and Bronny playing together as teammates was one of the more incredible storylines following the 2024 NBA Draft, assumptions that the father and son staying linked going forward are false, according to league sources who were granted anonymity to discuss front-office strategies,” The Athletic’s Dan Woike wrote.

As a second-rounder, Bronny is on a low salary and remains cost-controlled. Additionally, he has remained a piece that both JJ Redick and Rob Pelinka speak highly of.
Ahead of the postseason, when Bronny posted 7.2 points per game over six games, Redick stated that the Lakers would need the former USC Trojan down the stretch.
“We’re gonna have to have all hands on deck for the series,” Redick said after Lakers practice on Wednesday. “He’s got to be ready. Nick [Smith Jr.] will have to be ready. I think Bronny’s improved a lot. I think we trust him. The shooting piece, I’m a believer in, because of how well he shot it in the last two years in the G League.
“I know there was a stretch recently where he didn’t shoot it well and of course, he had a nice shooting game against Utah. He’s improved a ton defensively in terms of his body positioning, both on and off ball. We want him to continue to evolve as a disruptive defender as well.”
He ended up playing eight games, averaging 5.3 minutes per stint. He was not amazing offensively, but he provided energy and rebounding, fit in well on the floor, and didn’t stand out as someone who didn’t belong.
Considering his growth as a player, it makes sense why they want to give Bronny another year to develop and see what they have — his work ethic has been impressive.
