The NFL has a number of young stars and the Detroit Lions can boast two of the very best among that group.

Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and offensive tackle Penei Sewell are ranked as the No. 9 and No. 3 NFL players age 25 and under. In order to be eligible for its list, CBS' age cutoff was players who are 25 or younger when the 2026 regular season kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Rookies were also excluded so the list could focus on players that have already played in the NFL.
Jahmyr Gibbs
Gibbs enters 2026 after another terrific campaign where he totaled 1,223 rushing yards, 13 rushing scores and a career-best five touchdown receptions.
Here's what CBS wrote about Gibbs' No. 9 ranking:
Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the NFL's most exciting players and is on a historic pace to begin his career.
His 49 career touchdowns are the most by any player through his first three seasons in NFL history. He's third in scrimmage yards (3,768) and first in scrimmage touchdowns (38) over the past two seasons. Gibbs is also just the second player in NFL history to average at least 5.0 yards per carry in each of his first three seasons (min. 150 rushing attempts per season).
He's the engine that makes Detroit's offense go, and with David Montgomery traded to Houston this offseason, Gibbs is in line for an even bigger workload, setting up what could be an earth-shattering 2026 season. - Tyler Sullivan, CBS
The Lions exercised its fifth-year option on Gibbs in April, ensuring that Gibbs will be a Lion through the 2027 NFL season. Detroit is sure to be working on a long-term contract extension with Gibbs that could get finalized before the 2026 season ever kicks off.
Penei Sewell
In an ESPN survey, Sewell was recently ranked by NFL executives, coaches and scouts and the league's top offensive tackle.
It's no surprise to see Sewell toward the top of this ranking by CBS as well. Only Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson are ranked ahead of Sewell on CBS' top 25 NFL players age 25 and under.
Here's what CBS wrote about Sewell:
Penei Sewell is becoming the gold standard for offensive tackles in the NFL. He's elite as both a pass blocker and run blocker.
While Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery were lauded as a fantastic duo during their time together in Detroit's backfield, Sewell has been a major X-factor in their success on the ground. He's also been superb in protecting Jared Goff, allowing just three sacks last season, according to TruMedia. His 19 pressures allowed tied a career low, and he was beaten on just 2.1% of his snaps, also a career best.
He's been a first-team All-Pro in each of the last three seasons, and it's not hard to see why. - Tyler Sullivan, CBS
Sewell is making the move from right tackle to left tackle. The Lions rewarded Sewell with a four-year, $112 million contract extension in April of 2024 that has Sewell under contract with Detroit through the 2029 NFL season. Sewell's $28 million average annual salary has him among the league's highest-paid offensive tackles.
