The Detroit Tigers are one of the more fascinating teams for the 2026 MLB trade deadline. They're not out of the postseason hunt just yet, but it's still a bit too soon to tell.

It's very possible the Tigers are too far back by the August 3 trade deadline, and act as sellers. Detroit could also go on a run after the All-Star break, and be contenders and buy instead of sell.
With the deadline on the horizon, the direction the Tigers go, especially with Tarik Skubal at the center of trade rumors, will be very interesting. But, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, there's no in-between for Detroit. Either they're all-in or all-out.
Tigers are either 'all-in' or 'all-out' at trade deadline
"Forget the narrative that the Tigers could thread the needle and trade Skubal while also acquiring players," Nightengale writes. "Either they go all in, or all out."
This report from Nightengale is a very noteworthy one. It's simple: the Tigers are either going to keep their players and push for the postseason and a World Series, or they're selling.
A scenario in which they trade just Skubal for the massive haul they'd surely be able to receive, while keeping their other expiring veterans, just isn't going to happen.

If the Tigers trade from their big league roster, whether it's Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, Gleyber Torres, or any other veteran hitting free agency after 2026, the others will likely be readily available and likely on the move too.
This is a good sign for the Tigers fanbase, as it's showing that this team is either going to commit to this team being a contender or they're going to blow it up and rebuild.
While it would be a little sad to trade their key players like Skubal, Mize, and Torres, trading all of them would be much better than trading one player and fielding a worse roster in a postseason hunt.
Detroit has a few weeks before it has to make a decision at the trade deadline. But whatever decision they make, it's either going to be an all-in push for the postseason or an all-out sell-off this summer. There isn't going to be an in-between for Detroit.
