The Detroit Tigers have selected Ducks shortstop Maddox Molony in the sixth round of the 2026 MLB Draft. The Tigers used the No. 187 overall selection to take Molony.

Entering the season, Molony was a top-50 prospect for the 2026 MLB Draft with the potential to sneak into the first round. However, Molony had a tough season at the plate in 2026 with the Ducks, hitting for just a .233 average with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs. He still plays tremendous defense up the middle and could stick at shortstop long term.

Although he had a disappointing season at the plate, Molony still slugged 12 home runs and is third in program history with 37 homers as a Duck. He hit over .300 in his first two seasons at Oregon, so there is a chance that 2026 was a fluke year for the homegrown shortstop.

Being drafted so early in a long MLB draft is an honor, and Molony could sign and begin his professional career right away. However, the hype around Molony as a prospect has been high since his freshman season. He could return to Eugene for his final season with his hometown program and try to earn a higher selection next year. He will have until July 27 to decide on his future.

Molony has a clean swing path and operation and is still a natural fit at shortstop, which could lead to him signing and developing with the Tigers. Molony is the third Duck to be drafted this weekend, joining Ryan Cooney (Blue Jays) and Cal Scolari (White Sox). Oregon commit Andruw Giles was also selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
