Adriaan Jacobs becomes SA’s newest World Series of Poker bracelet winner

· The South African

South Africa has a new poker champion after 21-year-old Adriaan Jacobs became the country’s youngest-ever World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner with a stunning victory in Las Vegas.

Competing in his first-ever WSOP just weeks after celebrating his 21st birthday, Jacobs captured the Event #78: $600 Deepstack Championship, defeating a field of 5 177 entrants to claim the coveted gold bracelet and $282 817 (about R4.6 million) in prize money.

His triumph makes him only the third South African to win a live WSOP bracelet and ends a 36-year wait for another South African champion.

Dream birthday trip turns into poker history

What began as a birthday gift from his father, Barend Jacobs, quickly became a life-changing experience.

The pair travelled to Las Vegas just two weeks after Adriaan turned 21, hoping to enjoy the world’s biggest poker festival. Instead, they watched history unfold.

“I ran so incredibly hot. It’s insane. I ran hotter than I’ve ever run before. I won’t lie. I can’t believe I actually got this far,” Jacobs said after his victory.

An emotional Barend struggled to put the moment into words.

“He turned 21 weeks ago, and I thought, ‘Let me take him to the WSOP.’ So, we flew halfway around the world, and he’s got a bracelet.”

Ending a 36-year wait

According to PokerOrg, Jacobs’ victory has generated enormous excitement within South Africa’s poker community, with players across the country celebrating the emergence of a new international star.

His bracelet is the first won by a South African since Hugh Todd claimed victory in 1990, following Norman Keyser’s historic triumph in 1989.

Although Raymond Rahme produced one of South Africa’s greatest poker performances by finishing third in the 2007 WSOP Main Event, no South African had lifted a WSOP bracelet in the intervening 36 years.

Inspiring a new generation

Jacobs’ success has already fuelled optimism about the future of poker in South Africa, with many believing his achievement could inspire a new generation of players.

MJPT Global and the African Poker Championship congratulated the young star, saying his victory proved that dreams could become reality through hard work, courage and determination.

The organisation added that Jacobs had not only won one of poker’s most prestigious prizes but had also inspired aspiring players across South Africa and the African continent.

At just 21 years old, Jacobs has already etched his name into South African sporting history – and, judging by his remarkable debut on poker’s biggest stage, many believe it is only the beginning.
