Coco Gauff’s ex-coach, Brad Gilbert, pulled no punches in criticizing the absolute disaster that unfolded during the round-of-16 match between the USA and Belgium. On Monday, when the USA’s goalkeeper, Matt Freese, decided to charge way out of his penalty box, leaving his net exposed, he indirectly gifted Belgium an easy empty-net goal.

The USA squared off against Belgium on Monday at Lumen Field and struggled for the most part, trailing 2-1. Despite just needing one goal to make it even, USA goalkeeper Matt Freese committed a crucial error that broke the nation’s back. Instead of staying near his goal and letting the defenders deal with the long ball, Freese sprinted several yards outside his box to intercept it, leaving his goal exposed.

Along with many other football fans, Coco Gauff’s ex-coach, Brad Gilbert, a renowned soccer fan himself, could not hold back his shock and reacted with frustration on social media, writing:

“what was goalie 🥅 doing. absolutely disastrous game over, belgium 🇧🇪 has been the aggressor since the start of game.”

The USMNT was just one goal away from reaching its first quarterfinals in 24 years. Belgium later scored another goal to seal a 4-1 victory. Belgium will now face Spain in the quarterfinal this Friday.

Coco Gauff’s Ex-Coach Brad Gilbert Voices Frustration with Soccer’s Officiating Methods.

Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, recently spoke about his admiration for soccer on his X account but also expressed his frustration that he believes the officiating process remains unfair and has become the sport’s biggest problem.

“Soccer is a beautiful game, I love the game, but I just can’t stand the rewarding of what’s going on, and so many of these things are bang-bang plays that need to be played on.”

Gilbert argued that referees are awarding penalties and red cards for minor incidents. He also believes that referees are indirectly rewarding players for exaggerating contact.

“Two penalties and a red card last night in the Mexico-England game. All three of them, I don’t care what any of you soccer aficionados say, they were all play on. “There’s just so much flopping and acting on every single play, you don’t know what’s real or what’s not real.”

As a solution, Gilbert suggested that a soccer game should have at least 6-7 referees on the field, rather than relying on just one to keep up with the modern pace of the game.
