Brooklyn opens its California Classic schedule on Saturday against the Sacramento Kings, and the spotlight will immediately fall on rookie guards Mikel Brown Jr. and Darius Acuff Jr. as the two highly touted prospects continue a rivalry that stretches back to their high school days.
The matchup has quietly become one of the most anticipated battles of Summer League.
Brown was selected sixth overall by Brooklyn after an impressive freshman season at Louisville, while Sacramento grabbed Acuff one pick later at No. 7 following his standout year at Arkansas. With the Los Angeles Clippers taking Keaton Wagler at No. 5, many expected the Nets to draft Acuff instead.
Brooklyn ultimately went with Brown after building a strong relationship with him throughout the pre-draft process, and Saturday will provide the first glimpse of why the organization believed he was the better fit for the rebuild.
Brown already understands the storyline surrounding the matchup.
“Basketball nowadays, that rivalry brings along a lot of fans,” Brown said recently. “We know we’re going to see each other for the rest of our lives, so buckle up.”
The rivalry already carries plenty of history. Last season, Acuff helped Arkansas defeat Brown’s Louisville squad in a nationally ranked showdown despite Brown finishing with 22 points. They also faced off during the 2025 McDonald’s All-American Game, where Brown’s West team defeated Acuff’s East squad.
Now, both guards begin their NBA journeys on opposite sides once again.
Nets Have A Clear Outlook Before NBA Regular SeasonFor Brooklyn, however, the California Classic is about much more than one rookie matchup.
This marks the Nets’ first appearance in the event, giving fans an early opportunity to watch several key young players in meaningful developmental minutes. Alongside Brown, second-round pick Tyler Bilodeau is expected to make his professional debut, while second-year players Egor Demin, Drake Powell, Ben Saraf and Danny Wolf continue building chemistry within Brooklyn’s rebuild.
There are also plenty of developmental storylines deeper on the roster. Chaney Johnson, who already secured a Two-Way contract, and Grant Nelson will look to strengthen their cases for future opportunities within the organization.
Meanwhile, first-round pick Joshua Jefferson will not play until the Las Vegas Summer League because the Julius Randle-Nic Claxton trade has not yet become official. Nolan Traore will also miss Summer League while recovering from a knee procedure.
Still, Saturday’s opener against Sacramento gives Brooklyn its first real chance to evaluate the next phase of its young core, beginning with Brown’s highly anticipated showdown against Acuff.
