Sam Darnold came to Minnesota in 2024 with the hopes that he could springboard himself into a long-term situation. The season that played out was something that no one could have predicted, and the result was the team not coming to terms with him and pivoting back to J.J. McCarthy. Hindsight is always 20/20, but that may prove to be one of the worst decisions in recent memory for the franchise.
But what led to him not coming back to Minnesota? On a recent episode of Bussin' with the Boys, Danrold spoke about the contract talks with the Vikings. Darnold explained that early on contract talks, they knew they wouldn't be back in Minnesota.

Co-host Will Compton then asked if it was because they offered a one-year deal, to which Darnold responded, "Yeah. Yeah, that's exactly right"
If money wasn't the issue and length was, then the Vikings missed out. Of course, the connection they had with J.J. McCarthy at the time was the catalyst for making that decision. They now find themselves in a similar spot as they have signed Kyler Murray into a one-year deal in hopes he can be a hit the way Darnold was.
