Usually, rookies and second-year players who didn't see much action compete in summer league games. It's a great way to see young players progress and also gives young coaches a chance to perform as well.
Boston will not have head coach Joe Mazzulla coaching these games. Adam Himmelsbach from The Boston Globe reported on Friday that Amile Jefferson will be the head coach of the Celtics' summer league.

Have to assume Jayson Tatum will make an appearance in Vegas to support his guy.
Jefferson joined the Celtics staff as an assistant coach in the summer of 2023 after spending time as an assistant at Duke. The 33-year-old coach played five seasons at Duke from 2012 to 2017 and was also a teammate of Jayson Tatum. Jefferson played in only 30 NBA games, all with the Orlando Magic.
The Celtics will now have the opportunity to see how Jefferson can lead a team as the head coach. Many young coaches take this opportunity to learn how to be a head coach, and it might help Jefferson secure a head coaching position in the NBA or at the college level in the future.
