But with a couple more weeks to go before trade deadline buzz officially begins to heat up, the front office isn’t ready to give up on this team just yet.
David Stearns said prior to Tuesday night’s series opener against the Cubs that they are planning on giving the club more time to turn things around before taking a stance.
“The cutoff is August 3,” he said. “Clearly you have to have a direction at that point, we can prepare along parallel paths as we go along this -- we know we have to play better, and we’re going to give this team a chance to do that.”
Frustration continues to grow for team owner Steve Cohen, but Stearns emphasized he shares those sentiments.
“Steve certainly wants us to be better,” he said. “He’s frustrated, he expects us to do better than this, I expect us to do better than this -- he like me is going to withhold judgment on deadline strategy until we get closer to that time.”
Two of the main areas Stearns pointed directly towards in need of improvement as they look to get things trending in the right direction are the offense and starting pitching.
“Both our run scoring and our rotation are areas where we’re going to have to be more more consistent moving forward to go on the type of run of prolonged quality of play that we’re going to need to have.”
