Robert MacIntyre was among the early starters in the third round of the US Open, where strong winds helped create very tricky playing conditions.

Those out early in Long Island on Saturday particularly suffered in the challenging conditions, with MacIntyre certainly not immune.

But he did manage to battle to a three-over 73 to finish on seven-over for the week so far, following his first two rounds of 70 and 74.

As ever, MacIntyre was quick to speak his mind after his third round, where he issued a complaint about the US Open.

Robert MacIntyre complains about ‘carnage’ at the US Open

Speaking to BBC Sport NI at Shinnecock Hills, the Scot said: “Yeah, how long has that taken me to play in two balls?

“Four hours, probably 40.

“That can tell you all you need to know.

“I mean, it’s just… if we’re playing an Open Championship, which it starts getting like out here, I think some of the pin positions are just… to be honest a bit ridiculous.

“The pin on, I think it’s 11, is only a pin position if it’s flat calm, or calm enough.

“I mean, it’s blowing 30 miles an hour across that green.

“The scoring average on that one hole, par three, is going to be over four.

“I mean, it’s some of the best golfers in the world, or the best golfers in the world, and it’s… yeah it’s carnage.”

Robert MacIntyre warns the US Open could get ‘silly’

MacIntyre is well out of contention at this stage of proceedings, but he does deserve credit for merely making the weekend amid the tough conditions.

However, the two-time PGA Tour winner isn’t exactly looking forward to Sunday if things don’t change at Shinnecock.

When asked how firm and brutal the test will get in the final round given Saturday’s conditions, he replied: “Yeah to be honest I just asked them in there if they were going to water the greens today and they said they don’t want to, but they might have to.

“But I mean, my weather forecast was the way it is right now was to be breezy but start dying down, so they might… they’ve got to hope it starts dying down, or it’s going to… it will be carnage.

“If this place starts getting firm and this wind’s up, it’s going to be… yeah it’s going to get silly.”

Of course, not every player has experienced the same issues as MacIntyre, with Wyndham Clark posting a record 36-hole score at Shinnecock.

He was still the man to beat by the time the Scot finished his third round, although Sam Stevens and Rory McIlroy were among a group posing a real threat to his lead.

MacIntyre has impressed with his 11 birdies from his first 54 holes, from which he’s also carded 27 pars, 14 bogeys and two double bogeys.
