Orioles’ Bradish strikes out 12, Henderson homers to beat Mariners, 5-3

SEATTLE — When Kyle Bradish has one of his breaking balls working, opponents are usually in for a tough night. When both of them are on, they don’t stand a chance.
Bradish was masterful with both his curveball and slider Wednesday night, striking out a dozen Seattle Mariners for a new career high in the Orioles’ 5-3 win. The right-hander lasted 7 2/3 innings for the longest start by an Orioles pitcher this season and allowed one run on five hits and two walks on 100 pitches.

Forty-eight of those pitches were either curveballs or sliders, and Bradish made almost all of them count, with 15 of his 18 whiffs coming against the breaking balls. The Mariners put just three of them in play all night, and only one fell in for a hit as Bradish shook off consecutive five-run outings for his best start of the year.
Gunnar Henderson powered the offense with a two-run home run off Mariners starter George Kirby and helped turn the biggest defensive play of the night, converting a relay throw in from Leody Taveras to nab left fielder Connor Joe at third base. Taveras also hit an RBI triple in the sixth, Blaze Alexander racked up three hits, and Jackson Holliday hit a solo homer in the ninth to put Seattle to bed.
The win helped the Orioles (35-40) even up the series and force a rubber match Thursday, when Shane Baz will start opposite Bryan Woo.
Seattle made a late push with back-to-back home runs off Ryan Helsley by designated hitter Dominic Canzone and second baseman Cole Young to lead off the ninth, but the Orioles’ closer — making his first appearance since missing seven weeks with an elbow injury— settled down and retired the side to close out the victory.
