Climate change is making the world unlivable for human beings. Economic disparities are increasing everywhere. Violence between nations, and within them, is becoming uncontrollable. Humanity is outsourcing its intelligence to technology. Global governance systems have collapsed.

How long can humanity survive if we carry on the way we are?

It is time to turn for guidance to three great leaders of the twentieth century: Albert Einstein (science); John Maynard Keynes (economics); and Mahatma Gandhi (socio-political transformation).

On June 23, the United Nations will be publishing its assessment shortly of the progress made so far towards the Sustainable Development Goals, which all nations agreed in 2015 they would work together to meet by 2030. The 17 goals cover many interconnected problems: environmental degradation and climate change; persistent poverty and inequality; unsustainable economic growth; and breakdowns in governance institutions.

None of these goals is achievable if others are not achieved. Poverty will increase if environmental degradation continues. Poverty cannot be removed without well-functioning and equitable public health and education systems. Climate change cannot be arrested when global governance systems are breaking down.
