The three-time Super Bowl winner agreed to an amended deal on Wednesday that adds two years to his existing contract to make him a Chief through 2033... and a whole lot of money, too.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the new deal is "at a value of $504.75 million, making it the first NFL deal valued at over a half-billion dollars."
Just look at the specifics on this monster deal.
"The new money on Patrick Mahomes’ deal is worth $239.05 million, with the total value now at $504.75 million from 2026-33, with the first four years being guaranteed at signing," Schefter added on the new contract. "All $504.75 million becomes guaranteed through contract mechanisms. Mahomes can earn up to $522.25 through incentives and escalators. Beginning in 2027, when the new money begins, the deal averages $64M per year, setting a new NFL record for average annual value."
Grading the gigantic Mahomes deal
That is obviously jaw-dropping money for anybody, but Mahomes is just built differently. He's a threat to win a Super Bowl whenever he's on a team's roster; the AFC has traditionally run through Mahomes and Kansas City since his arrival. There's just not much else you need to justify spending this kind of money on this kind of player?
Is he still the best quarterback in the NFL? The debate rages on. Guys like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Matthew Stafford and Justin Herbert have been in the conversation for a while, and risers like Drake Maye, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels will certainly make waves in the years to come.
However, if you ask us, Mahomes is the one we want on Super Bowl Sunday... or any given Sunday, for that matter.
With coach Andy Reid likely nearing retirement, having Mahomes locked in through 2033 is huge. It gives a perennial Super Bowl contender a healthy window of certainty, as long as the quarterback stays healthy. After all, he's coming off ACL and LCL tears and isn't a lock to be ready for the start of the 2026 season. Even then, Mahomes is always worth every penny. It's a great deal, even if it's, y'know, a lot of money.
Cap flexibility might get a bit trickier in the years to come, but having Mahomes helps a ton to alleviate it.
