The ECB confirmed on Monday evening that it has launched a formal investigation into the conduct of Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson after both men were caught up in a confrontation involving a Saracens rugby academy player.
The incident took place hours after England's Test victory over New Zealand at Lord's. According to Telegraph Sport, Stokes and Atkinson were among a group of around seven England players who went out in London after the Test match ended.
The rest of the group left before midnight, but Stokes and Atkinson stayed on, breaching the team's recently introduced curfew. During the course of the evening, they encountered Saracens players who were holding their own end-of-season party at the same venue.
A Saracens academy player is understood to have thrown a punch at Atkinson. The blow missed Atkinson and instead struck an ECB security guard who was present to supervise the England players. That guard required stitches as a result of the impact.
Neither Stokes nor Atkinson sustained any injuries. No further punches were definitively confirmed, though the situation escalated into a broader confrontation. Police were not called and were not involved at any stage.
Saracens released a statement acknowledging the incident and wrote: "We are aware of an incident involving an academy player connected to Saracens on Sunday evening. The club is currently establishing the full facts and is in contact with the relevant authorities and individuals involved. Once this process is complete, the matter will be reviewed and addressed appropriately.”
Moreover, a senior figure in English rugby further confirmed: "The Saracens player caused this and has a rep. I would not want the England cricket captain to lose his job over this.”

Harry Brooks waiting in the wings to succeed Ben Stokes
Stokes is understood to be reflecting on his position as captain. The ECB may also take the decision out of his hands depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Both he and Atkinson are expected to miss the second Test at The Oval, which begins on June 17. The ECB has delayed announcing its squad for that match while the investigation continues.
Atkinson's absence would be a particular blow as he took seven wickets for 39 runs at Lord's and was one of the standout performers of the match.
Harry Brook is expected to step in as captain for The Oval Test, though his own record on this particular front is not clean.
He was fined close to £52,000, the maximum available punishment, after staying out drinking until the early hours the night before captaining England in a Wellington ODI last October, in the company of Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue.
Brook was not suspended on that occasion, but the incident was formally censured. The ECB hierarchy is understood to be furious. They may not believe Stokes and Atkinson provoked the confrontation, but the breach of the curfew itself is a disciplinary offence, and one that the board had been explicit about in the aftermath of the Ashes humiliation last winter.
The ghost of Bristol returns to haunt Stokes
In 2017, Stokes was involved in a late-night street brawl in Bristol that cost him the England vice-captaincy.
He was eventually cleared in court of affray, and the years that followed were remarkable. It is an extraordinary redemption story that included Ashes victories, a World Cup win, and transforming England Test cricket.
However, the Bristol incident had seemed long buried, but Monday morning dug it up once again.
More importantly, the irony is not lost on anyone that Stokes gave a preview of what was coming after the New Zealand victory. In his post-match press conference, he said: "I was obviously very, very happy that we won this week. I knew how big this game was in terms of the result and how it was going to be perceived externally if it didn’t go well.
"I probably won’t be really happy and smiling until I get up there and share a proper beer with the boys because I have to come here and do this – no disrespect to you guys [the media].”
It must be noted that Stokes had largely given up alcohol in 2025 and even invested in an alcohol-free spirits business. He turned 35 last week and had seemed, to many observers, to have genuinely put the darker chapters of his past behind him. Nonetheless, the Chelsea incident has certainly awakened the spirits of Bristol.
