The New York Jets decided to completely shake up their quarterback room following the disastrous 2025 season. They cut Justin Fields and let Tyrod Taylor walk in free agency.

While Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe are still on the roster, neither should be seeing playing time in 2026 for the Jets. Geno Smith will start, and Cade Klubnik is a developmental rookie QB option. But, who's the backup QB?
They don't have a backup QB on the roster yet, and their options are dwindling fast. Russell Wilson retired and left for CBS Sports, and now, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Brendan Sorsby was granted 2026 college eligibility to further present a problem for the Jets at backup QB.
Jets have a backup QB issue amid Brendan Sorsby news
"NEWS: A judge in district court in Lubbock County, Texas, has granted the injunction requested by Texas Tech QB Brandon Sorsby," Thamel reports. "He's set to be eligible for the 2026 season."
This report is some massive news for college football, as Sorsby is eligible for another college season. But it's also huge news for the NFL.
Since Sorsby was potentially going to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, the Jets had a chance to use a pick in 2027's class to land a QB prospect who would be a highly-ranked QB in next year's stacked class before the 2026 season.
But, instead, since he's been granted eligibility for another college season, the Jets have lost out on another potential backup QB option this offseason.

Between this Sorsby news and the Wilson CBS Sports TV gig news, the Jets have been dealt some tough updates on the two best backup QB options they could've turned to this offseason to back up Smith.
Now, the Jets will either have to trade with a team for one of their extra backups or explore one of the free agent options this summer.
Taysom Hill, Joshua Dobbs, Cooper Rush, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jeff Driskel, Brett Rypien, Desmond Ridder, John Wolford, and Clayton Tune are among the best options available.
None of those are great options, and a few, like Garoppolo and Hill, are seriously considering retirement, like Wilson already decided.
Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey are left without a great backup QB option with this Sorsby news, as they're either going to have to spend draft capital or a player to acquire a new QB, or sign a lackluster option in free agency.
