That was when things got hairy. Angels starter Jose Soriano ran out of gas in the sixth, and a pair of home runs by Dalton Rushing and Ryan Ward made it 6-5.
It looked like another Angels disaster in the making, but the Halos kept hitting, as Rivero singled home yet another run and homers from Jo Adell and Zach Neto made it a 12-5 game.
Manager Kurt Suzuki didn’t mess around after that. He pulled reliever Drew Pomeranz after the lefty gave up a pair of hits, and after that he turned to Chase Silseth and Sam Bachman to hail this one down. Both relievers were up to the task as they held the Dodgers scoreless, and Mitch Farris put the cherry on top by striking out the side in the ninth.
The win was yet another reminder of what the Angels can look like when they get solid pitching and their offense isn’t giving up at-bats. Soriano got has seventh win of the season, and it was a relief to see him get somewhat back on track for the Halos.
There were plenty of other offensive heroes in this one as well. Adell had a four-hit game to go with his 10th home run, and Neto got hit 12th as he continues to hit with pop. Rivero ended up going 5-for-5, and Jose Siri had a three-hit game with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. The Angels feasted on multiple Dodgers pitchers as the Dodgers went with an opener, with Emmet Sheehan taking the loss.
The Angels welcome the Houston Astros to Anaheim tomorrow night, with the Halos 4-1/2 games back of the struggling ‘Stros. There’s a chance to make up some ground here if the Angels can actually start to play consistently solid baseball. Just a thought.
