How Taylor Rabe delivered for Ole Miss again to help clinch College World Series trip

AUBURN, AL — It's no secret that Ole Miss baseball pitcher Taylor Rabe is pitching at an elite level.

A small part of coach Mike Bianco has reason to be sad the word is getting out.

Rabe was instrumental in Ole Miss' 5-3 win at Auburn on June 6 that clinched the super regional and sent the Rebels to the College World Series. He started the game and threw seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

Senior first baseman Will Furniss brought up Rabe's bright future postgame. Rabe is a redshirt sophomore in his third college season, but it's his first season as a weekend starter.

"This guy's draft eligible, it's probably his last year, too," Furniss said.

Then Bianco cut in.

"Stop with that, " Bianco said with a smile.

He is ranked No. 90 in the MLB Draft prospect rankings. Rabe (6-3, 3.71 ERA) entered the super regional having allowed just two earned runs over his past 12 innings.

Ole Miss has won the past four games he's started. Rabe credited an observation in the scouting report for helping him pitch well in the super regional.

"When we were looking at that we knew Auburn was going to be a team that takes a lot of short swings, hits a lot of ground balls," Rabe said. "Kind of plays station-to-station baseball. It was going to be critical, even after giving up some singles through the gaps, just kind of sticking with it and not trying to do too much."

Rabe gave up six hits, but five of those were singles. The other was a Mason McCraine double in the fifth inning. McCraine did not come around to score.

Bianco said it was a great performance by Rabe. The two Auburn runs off Rabe came in the fourth inning off a single and a blown rundown play that cost a run.

"If you step back and say, 'Hey, you are going to be in a super regional championship game with a chance to go to Omaha and your starting pitcher is going to pitch seven innings and only give up two runs,' there's not a coach in the country who wouldn't take that," Bianco said.
