During his NBA Finals media availability on Tuesday, Spurs’ second-year guard Stephon Castle was asked what makes this young San Antonio team so great. In his response, he made a definitive declaration about Wembanyama’s impact.

“With our leader being Vic — with how good he is, with how young he is. For him to not have any ego, it fed great energy into our locker room,” Castle said. “That kind of confidence and that kind of groove coming into the playoffs is what you want, and I think we hit our stride at the right time.

“And yeah, also, we have the best player in the world on our team.”

Wembanyama led the Spurs to victory over back-to-back reigning league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the defending NBA-champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, earning unanimous MVP honors for the series. The 22-year-old Frenchman has been historic through his first 17 career playoff games, averaging 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game.
