Odell Beckham Jr. is still beloved by fans of the New York Giants, so there won't be many bothered by the news that he's returning to play for the team that drafted him into the NFL.

And while the cost surely won't be much, it's not a move without risk. Signing OBJ, viewed through certain lenses, has the chance of being a big mistake.

The potential issues mostly stem from the fact that Beckham hasn't been an effective NFL wide receiver for years.

In 2024 with the Dolphins, he had nine catches total across nine games, for 55 yards.

In 2025, Beckham didn't get the chance to play in a single game.

Now on the one hand, the Giants could likely get rid of OBJ for very little cost if he doesn't pan out. But there's some added baggage to getting rid of Beckham from this team specifically.

And so if he's around, the question becomes: Is he really going to play?

If OBJ is on the field, and isn't effective anymore, that hurts the development of second-year QB Jaxson Dart.

Any snaps for Beckham, particularly if he isn't making an impact, also come at the expense of new guys like Calvin Austin, Darnell Mooney and third-round rookie Malachi Fields -- all of whom would surely benefit from building a relationship with Dart on the field.

The Giants even have Jalin Hyatt, Isaiah Hodgins and Beaux Collins still around, too, all guys who once had believers in the building. If OBJ sticks, that probably means at least one of them is gone, maybe more.

Maybe this is a sign the Giants aren't sure about Malik Nabers' health, but OBJ at this point in his career isn't exactly ready to be a savior.

But if Beckham takes snaps from worthier players, limits Dart's ability to be an effective passer and then draws some headlines for his off-field personality, he may prove not to have been worth whatever this contract costs the Giants.
