How to Watch Yankees vs. Mets

Friday’s opener features one of the best pitching duels of the MLB weekend.

The Yankees are expected to hand the ball to rookie breakout starter Cam Schlittler, who enters the game with a dominant 5-1 record, 1.35 ERA, and 0.81 WHIP through his first stretch of the 2026 season. Schlittler has quickly emerged as an early American League Cy Young contender and has allowed just three earned runs across his last five starts combined.

The Mets counter with former Yankees reliever Clay Holmes, who has successfully transitioned into a starting role this season. Holmes enters Friday with a 4-3 record and a stellar 1.86 ERA while holding opposing hitters to limited damage throughout the first two months of the season. 

The matchup marks Holmes’ first Subway Series start against his former team since leaving the Bronx.

Although the Yankees still own one of the best records in the American League, the club enters the Subway Series after losing five of its last six games. Aaron Judge continues to lead the offense, but opposing teams have increasingly pitched around the Yankees superstar in recent games. The Yankees have also dealt with injuries throughout the lineup, including ongoing concerns involving Giancarlo Stanton and Jasson Domínguez. 

Still, the Yankees remain one of baseball’s most dangerous power-hitting teams and hold the advantage in overall lineup depth entering the weekend.

The Mets have endured a disappointing start to the 2026 season, but the club enters Friday with momentum after sweeping the Detroit Tigers earlier this week. 

Juan Soto remains the focal point of the Mets’ lineup during his first season, fully embracing the crosstown rivalry. Soto has recently started to heat up offensively after a slow stretch earlier this month, and all eyes will be on his at-bats against Yankees pitching throughout the weekend. 

The Mets have also battled major injuries this season, including absences involving Francisco Lindor and Francisco Alvarez, both of whom remain sidelined entering the series.
