The New York Yankees found out on Wednesday why they haven't given Anthony Volpe a chance to play this year outside of this game.

The hope was for Volpe to come back up with Jose Caballero being injured and at least show that he's upset about being sent down. Whether he really feels that way or not is one thing, but his play didn't show it, as Volpe was absolutely horrendous once again, going hitless in three at-bats and making an error at shortstop. It was what many Yankees fans have grown frustrated with over the past few years.
For that reason, and that reason only, the Yankees are definitely going to bring back Jose Caballero and have him as the full-time starter when he's healthy. According to the latest from The Athletic, that's all but confirmed already by Aaron Boone.
“Boone said it’s his “expectation” that Caballero will return to being the starting shortstop when he is healthy, adding that he has “played as well as anyone out there.” Caballero has been slightly above average at the plate, with a 105 wRC+, and excellent defensively, leading all major-league shortstops with 9 Defensive Runs Saved.
“Boone would not commit to Volpe remaining in the majors when Caballero returns, a sign this could be a short stay,” Chris Kirschner of The Athletic wrote.
Major League Baseball is a game of getting your chance and running with it. Caballero did exactly that during the first month or so of the regular season for the Yankees, and deserves to be the starting shortstop until he struggles.
No matter how that makes Volpe feel, Caballero has been the better player and, as a result, the Yankees are going in that direction.
