POLOKWANE CITY HOLD FIRM EARLY ON

It was not a straightforward night for the visitors. Polokwane City came in with a clear plan and executed it well in the first half, staying compact and disciplined without the ball.

Sundowns dominated possession but found it difficult to break through a well-organised Rise and Shine side. The hosts closed down space in midfield and limited Sundowns’ usual attacking flow, forcing them into areas where they could not create clear chances.

Polokwane looked comfortable sitting deep and waiting for moments to counter, and for long spells, they managed to keep the defending champions quiet. At half-time, the game remained goalless, with Sundowns still searching for a way through.

MARCELO ALLENDE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE FOR SUNDOWNS

The breakthrough eventually came in the 62nd minute. Marcelo Allende finished off a neat move after being set up by Lebo Mothiba, providing the quality moment Sundowns needed to edge ahead.

That goal forced the hosts to open up slightly, but Sundowns handled the closing stages with experience and control, limiting any real threat as they protected their lead.

The win takes Sundowns to 61 points from 26 matches, putting them back in control of the title race. Polokwane City, meanwhile, can take positives from a disciplined display, even if they walked away empty-handed.

The next round of fixtures sees Sundowns and Polokwane City face each other in a quick rematch this Sunday, 3 May, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
