The SASSA Workers’ Day long weekend is right around the corner. And here’s the latest update for SASSA beneficiaries awaiting their next disbursement. Keeping in mind, many will still be smarting from the agency’s poor handling of April 2026’s Easter long weekend payment schedule.

Last month’s grant payments couldn’t have gone much worse for SASSA if they’d tried. Four consecutive non-banking days meant some payments were pushed back. And the dreaded five-week cycle, triggered by Easter holidays, was made even worse by unprecedented quiet about April 2026 increases. With less than two weeks to go before payments, millions of beneficiaries still had no information on when they’d even be paid. Or how much …

Worse still, the total lack of communication from the South African Social Security Agency allowed misinformation to fill the gap and spread alarm. When 2026/27 annual payment dates were finally announced, agency spokesperson Andile Tshona attributed the delays to ‘administrative issues’ within the National Treasury.

Unfortunately, that was just the start, Disability and Children’s Grants were pushed to well after the Easter long weekend (Tuesday 7 April and Wednesday 8 April). Readers wrote in to tell us they couldn’t attend Easter church services because they had no money. To add insult to injury, beneficiaries were unhappy when 3.4% were confirmed. So, will it be more of the same for SASSA Workers’ Day long weekend?

WORKERS’ DAY LONG WEEKEND FOR SASSA GRANTS

Well, the Workers’ Day public holiday falls on Friday 1 May 2026 this week. But never fear, because SASSA is not messing with the official payment schedule in any way. SASSA Old-Age Grants for May 2026 commence on Tuesday 5 May. SASSA Disability and War Veterans Grant get their day on Wednesday 6 May 2026. And SASSA Children’s Grants go ahead on Thursday 7 May.

Grant values for SASSA Workers’ Day long weekend payments reflect increases that came into effect in April 2026. These followed the Finance Minister’s February 2026 Budget Speech adjustments linked to the country’s annual projected inflation of 3.4%. As mentioned, this figure is quite a bit lower than 2025’s 4.8% increase.

GRANT GUIDE: SASSA WORKERS’ DAY LONG WEEKEND

After debt servicing, social welfare constitutes the most expensive to the national fiscus. Image: File
  • SASSA Old-Age Grant: You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee residing in South Africa. And you must be aged 60 or older. Your income must be less than R8 983 per month if single, or R17 980 per month if married. You may own property, but your assets cannot exceed R1 524 600 if single, or R3 049 200 if married. Those aged 60 to 74 receive R2 400 and 75s and over receive R2 420.
  • SASSA Child Support Grant: For the SASSA Workers’ Day long weekend, this is paid to the primary caregiver of a child under 18. The caregiver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or recognised refugee. If you register your child the moment they are born, right up until their 18th birthday when benefits lapse, government will pay roughly R190 000 (adjusted for inflation). Means tests apply to the caregiver.
  • SASSA Disability Grant: You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee residing in South Africa, aged 18 to 59. And you must be assessed by a medical professional, either your own doctor, or a doctor appointed by SASSA. Note that the grant is not permanent, it is typically approved for one to two years at a time and must be renewed with up-to-date medical assessment. The same means test as the SASSA Old-Age Grants apply.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SASSA GRANT RECIPIENTS?

  • SASSA War Veterans Grant: Available to South African citizens who served in World War II or the Korean War, who are 60 years or older and pass the standard means test. Given the age profile of qualifying veterans, this is among the smallest recipient groups in the country, only a few hundred recipients.
  • SASSA Care Dependency Grant: For parents or primary caregivers of children under 18 with physical or mental disability requiring permanent care. The child must be assessed by a state-approved medical practitioner. Standard citizenship and means test requirements apply.
  • SASSA Foster Child Grant: These are only for court-appointed foster parents. A valid court order confirming foster placement is a non-negotiable requirement. The grant is paid to the foster parent, not the child.
  • SASSA Grant-in-Aid: This R580 supplementary grant over the SASSA Workers’ Day long weekend is for people who already receive any of the forementioned grants. However, they also need full-time care due to physical or mental disability preventing them from performing daily activities. It is paid in addition to the recipient’s primary grant and is not as a standalone payment.
