OPP investigating fatal Hwy. 401 crash in Pickering; ROPE Squad apprehends federal offender

Ontario Provincial Police said one person is dead following a multi-vehicle crash on Hwy. 401 in Pickering in the early morning hours of Sunday.

OPP said officers responded at 2:40 a.m. to reports of a two-vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle on the eastbound collector lanes of Hwy. 401 near Westney Rd.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, a 38-year-old whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said that at 4:25 a.m., a secondary crash happened involving a passenger vehicle and a police cruiser in the same area. Two officers were transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening or life-altering injuries.

All eastbound lanes at Hwy. 401 and Whites Rd. were closed for investigation.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or ontariocrimestoppers.ca .

ROPE Squad apprehends federal offender

Provincial police said that a federal offender who went unlawfully at large in 2023 has been apprehended.

On Sunday, Ontario Provincial Police said the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad located and arrested Brent Hoshal in Toronto. Horshal is serving a three-year sentence for assault, overcome resistance – choke, forcible confinement, assault cause bodily harm, fail to comply, assault with a weapon, mischief, four counts of breach of long-term supervision order, and escape or being at large without excuse.

Horshal was unlawfully at large since Aug. 31, 2023.
