Investigators are sharing security video of a reported theft in an effort to alert shoppers and increase public awareness by providing a visual example of how these thefts are completed.

Police say the suspects often operate in teams of two or more, watching for unsuspecting patrons who use their cell phones while shopping.

Cops say once a shopper is identified, they are followed until an opportunity exists where one suspect is able to bump or rub up against the victim, simultaneously accessing the victim’s pocket and taking the cellphone, typically from an unsecured jacket pocket where the phone was last placed.

The suspect then quickly hands the stolen cellphone to a second suspect to complete the theft, which takes only seconds to complete.

Preventative theft tips offered

Halton police are working to solve these thefts and are offering tips to help the public protect against pickpockets, including:

• Secure your phone in a fastened inside jacket pocket or pouch when not in use

• Maintain a tight grip or control of your phone when in crowded spaces

• Never leave your phone unattended

• Maintain awareness of your surroundings, people who may be watching or following

• Keep your phone secure and out of sight, only use if necessary

Police say to immediately report any incident of theft and suspicious activity to police by calling 9-1-1 or via the HRPS general line at 905-825-4777.
