Manipur: Congress demands probe into fresh killings

The Congress on Monday demanded an investigation into the latest killings in Manipur, including those of two children.
The Opposition party called for an immediate and time-bound probe and demanded urgent measures to restore law and order in Manipur, compensation for victims of the violence and institutional reforms to restore normalcy in the state.
Inner Manipur MP A Bimol Akoijam alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party governments at the Centre and in the state had “abdicated responsibility” of protecting lives in Manipur.
The party said it had submitted a charter of demand to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking immediate intervention in the matter.
Two children were killed in Bishnupur’s Tronglaobi on April 7 after a suspected projectile strike hit their home. The incident, which occurred while the family was asleep, left a five-year-old boy and five-month-old girl dead.
Residents had alleged that the projectile was fired from nearby hill slopes, India Today NE reported. It was also alleged that the projectile had been fired by suspected Kuki militants.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, a Kuki organisation, rejected the allegations that members of the community were connected to the incident.
The village where the incident took place is located near the hill areas of Churachandpur and has witnessed tensions since the ethnic clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities in May 2023.
