Latest Jordyn Tyson update could impact Commanders and others

You could make the case that the wide receiver position is the deepest in next week's 2026 NFL Draft. And that is without a prospect like Ja'Marr Chase or Calvin Johnson. There's a good chance that at least six receivers will be chosen in the first round next week, which is good for a team like the Washington Commanders.

Washington's need for another receiver opposite Terry McLaurin dates back to 2019. The Commanders have tried multiple ways to get McLaurin some help. Washington's lack of depth at receiver was finally exposed in 2025, when McLaurin dealt with the first significant injury of his career, sidelining him for seven games.
The Commanders are on the clock at No. 7 overall next Thursday night. Washington is in a unique position because a terrific player or two will fall. Will it be Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love or Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles? Will Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate be off the board before Washington's on the clock at No. 7?
What about Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson?
The 6-foot-2, 203-pound Tyson is considered by many to be the best receiver prospect in this class. Talent-wise, Tyson is easily a top-10 pick. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Tyson has a complicated injury history.
- 2022: Torn ACL, PCL, MCL
- 2024: Broken collarbone
- 2025: Multiple hamstring injuries cost Tyson four games
Tyson was unable to work out at the 2026 NFL combine or at Arizona State's pro day. However, on Friday, he held a private workout for NFL teams, during which he ran routes but did not do any athletic testing. At least 20 teams attended, including the Commanders. And, according to ESPN college football senior writer Pete Thamel, Tyson was impressive.
"He showed the twitch, explosiveness and leaping ability we all saw in the fall," Thamel wrote on X. "He showed he’s healthy and still explosive, which is all he needed to do."
This is huge news. For teams like the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Commanders, and New Orleans Saints, all picking in the top 10 and reportedly considering a wide receiver, Tyson's reported clean bill of health could shake things up.
Tyson was never getting out of the first round before Friday's workout. He's too talented. But almost no one had him mocked in the top 10; now Tyson is reportedly on New York's radar at No. 5 overall. The Cleveland Browns (No. 6 pick), who have been linked to Tate, should also be paying close attention.
This is all good news for Washington GM Adam Peters. Whether he's actually considering a receiver in the top 10 or not, Tyson's workout could either ease the Commanders' concerns or lead to another terrific prospect falling into their laps. If Washington loves Tate, which many believe they do, it could help him fall to the Commanders at No. 7.
Friday's news on Tyson certainly made next week even more interesting.
