Florida baseball drops midweek game against Bethune-Cookman

· Yahoo Sports

Florida baseball suffered one of its worst losses of the season Tuesday night, falling to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 13-7.

Bethune-Cookman scored six different innings, but most of the damage came in the seventh. Three Florida pitchers — Eli Blair, Schuyler Sandford and Cooper Walls — combined to give up five hits and three free bases (a walk and two hit batters). Walls also made a throwing error that allowed the spiral to continue.

Jackson Hoyt made the start for the Gators, going 1 1/3 innings. The Wildcats got to him for three runs on one hit, one walk and two hit batters; although, Billy Barlow was on the mound when two of those runs scored. Barlow lasted 1 2/3, getting Florida through the third. He gave up a solo home run. Caden McDonald worked the 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits and one walk. Blair got the final out of the sixth.

Despite all the trouble in the seventh, Sandford went six up, six down over the final two frames. He struck out five batters — a team-high for the day.

Florida's offense wasn't bad. The Gators answered the Wildcats in the first and second innings to keep it a one-run game. Cade Kurland had two hits, including a two-run double in the sixth to tie the game at five runs apiece. Blake Cyr had three singles, and Brendan Lawson went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the seventh.

Justin Naeau also had a multi-hit day, and Ethan Surowiec and Landon Stripling both had singles to account for 11 of Florida's hits on the day. Kyle Jones had a rather weird day at the plate, going 0-for-1 in five appearances, thanks to a pair of sacrifice flies and two walks.

Florida's going to have to wear this loss on their chest, but it's a short turnaround to the next series, which starts on Thursday. The Auburn Tigers come to Gainesville for another important three-game set against an SEC team.
