Florida re-enters RPI top 5 after 3-1 week vs. FSU, Georgia

· Yahoo Sports

Florida has been in and out of the D1Baseball top 25 all season long, but the Gators have remained a top-10 team in rating percentage index (RPI) for most of the season.

RPI is the weighted sum of a team's winning percentage, their opponent's winning percentage and their opponents' opponents' winning percentage. Opponent win percentage accounts for 50% of the total, and the other 50% are split evenly among the other factors. Road wins are valued at 1.3 compared to home wins being at 0.7. Neutral site games sit in the middle at 1.0.

Florida is ranked No. 4 in RPI after winning the series at Georgia. The Gators are 11-6 in Quadrant 1 games, 3-3 in Quadrant 2 games, 7-0 in Quadrant 3 games and 6-1 in Quadrant 4 games. The Gators have the fifth-toughest strength of schedule. In non-conference matchups, Florida also ranks fourth but with the 25th-toughest strength of schedule.

The NCAA selection committee considers RPI as a tool for the NCAA Tournament. Regional hosts, regional seeding and at-large bids are partially determined by it. While it's not a perfect system, Florida's RPI positioning has many questioning the Gators' placement in the various rankings.

Florida sits at No. 20 on the D1Baseball top 25 and No. 18 on the Coaches Poll. Baseball America had the Gators jump 14 spots to No. 7 this week, moving ahead of Georgia, and Perfect Game has them just outside the top 10 at No. 11.
