The New York Giants and star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence aren't on the same page regarding his contract, which has led to him requesting a trade.
Lawrence signed a four-year extension worth $87 million with the Giants during the 2023 offseason, but the three-time Pro Bowler is now looking for a new deal and a significant raise.
Lawrence could ask for $35 million annually in next contract
According to Connor Hughes of SNY, Lawrence is expected to seek $30 million per year in his next contract, and that number could even be as high as $35 million.
"The decline in production likely prevents Lawrence from resetting the market, but one source expected him to demand $30 million annually. Another front office source, because of the salary cap increase, foresaw something closer to $35 million," Hughes said.
Lawrence is coming off a down year in 2025 with just 0.5 sacks and 31 tackles. The 28-year-old wasn't the dominant force that we were used to seeing, even in the run game.
Though Lawrence's play left a lot to be desired this past season, he's still arguably the best defensive tackle in football on his best day, and could be in for a bounce-back 2026 season under a new coaching staff.
With the Giants slated to have a nice amount of cap space over the next few years and young quarterback Jaxson Dart on his rookie deal, the franchise should just pay Lawrence and retain one of their cornerstones.
However, his play in 2025 raises some concerns and could be why New York is hesitant to sign him to another lucrative contract.
