Cade Horton, their star pitcher who was the runner-up in the 2025 NL Rookie of the Year race, is dealing with an injury to his forearm. But there was initial hope he could return at some point this season.
That hope is no more, as Craig Counsell announced to reporters, including Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network, that Horton will undergo season-ending UCL surgery.
Cade Horton to miss rest of 2026 season with UCL surgery
"#Cubs Cade Horton will have surgery on his UCL and miss the rest of the season," McGregor reports.
This is some awful news for Horton and for the Cubs. Not only is Horton out for the year, but his recovery is going to be a long and uncertain one.
This is about the worst news that the Cubs could've gotten on Horton's injury, which was known to be trending in the wrong direction earlier this morning.

But on Tuesday afternoon, they were dealt the crushing news that Horton will miss the rest of the 2026 season.
He was off to a solid start to the season as well, as he had a 2.45 ERA in 7.1 innings pitched with a 1-0 record and four total strikeouts.
Now, the Cubs' 24-year-old righty is going to miss the rest of the 2026 season as he's undergoing UCL surgery. The Cubs will need to find a starter or two to replace Horton this season.
