Amaka Agugua-Hamilton out as Virginia women's basketball coach

Despite a surprising run to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament by the Virginia Cavaliers this season, the University of Virginia announced Saturday, April 4 that its head coach, Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, will not return next season.

In four years with the program, Agugua-Hamilton guided the Cavaliers to a 70-58 record. In this year's NCAA Tournament, the Cavaliers advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000. Agugua-Hamilton took over the program in 2022 after the Cavaliers went 5-22 the previous season. She guided Virginia to a 15-15 season her first year.
This season Virginia finished 22-12, the first 20-win season for the program since 2016-17.
Virginia earned a postseason berth by being incluced in the NCAA Tournament's First Four. The Cavaliers beat Arizona State to open postseason play, then upset seventh-seeded Georgia before upsetting second-seeded Iowa in double-overtime. Virginia's run ended in the Sweet 16 with a loss to TCU.
Virginia said in a press release that a national search will begin immediately.
