US probes ‘neglected’ Afrikaner refugee complaints

US authorities are probing the complaints lodged by individuals in the refugee resettlement programme. This comes after an investigation revealed that several Afrikaner families shared their dire living conditions in their new homes.

To date, over 3 500 primarily white South Africans have taken up refugee status in America.

This follows an executive order issued last February in which US President Donald Trump offered resettlement to minorities affected by “racial discrimination”.

US TO PROBE REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT PROGRAMME COMPLAINTS

According to CBS News, hundreds of South African refugees have been contacted by the US government in relation to their resettlement process experience.

This follows a report in February from US publication, The Free Press, which shared how their investigation found that some Afrikaner refugees were living in poor conditions.

This was reportedly due to the misappropriation of funds by several refugee assistance agencies.

Authorities have since contacted over 700 refugees and assured them of their move to improve the experience. They are also looking into implementing a new bidding process to new non-profit organisations. This would also assist in resettlement Afrikaners in areas that were conducive to their work experience.

In their initial report, The Free Press spoke to ten South Africans, who stated that they had been placed in mouldy, dirty motels and apartments infested with cockroaches. They stated their accommodation were in “high-crime” areas.

Many claimed to have little to no food, eating just one meal a day to survive. Others lived in freezing temperatures, without warm coats, and had to travel long distances in the snow to their nearest grocery store. Some complained about the high cost of living, adding that much of their earnings went towards rent.

The refugees also claimed that they had not been offered assistance in finding employment.

HOW MANY SOUTH AFRICANS HAVE RESETTLED IN THE US?

According to a recent Reuters report, over 3 500 South Africans have taken up refugee status in the US.

This comes amid their report that thousands of white expats are considering returning to the country.

Many have cited their return for reasons such as reuniting with family, the warmer weather, and the cost of living and living standards.
