Commanders to host other Texas Tech pass rusher on pre-draft visit

The Washington Commanders entered the offseason with several needs, but none was more glaring than edge rusher. Once Dorance Armstrong was injured in Week 7 last season, the Commanders struggled to get to opposing passers, making life even tougher for a struggling secondary.

GM Adam Peters set out to fix that in free agency, signing Odafe Oweh to a four-year, $100 million contract and K'Lavon Chaisson and Charles Omenihu to one-year deals. Chaisson is particularly intriguing, coming off an excellent season with the Patriots and is only 26.

Instead of taking a chance and waiting on an edge rusher in the 2026 NFL Draft, Peters was aggressive in free agency. That doesn't mean an edge rusher is still not a possibility during the draft. Armstrong is entering the final year on his contract, while only Oweh is signed beyond 2026.

So, while the Commanders are linked to the top pass rushers, like Arvell Reese (Ohio State), David Bailey (Texas Tech) and Rueben Bain Jr. (Miami), Washington is looking beyond the top prospects.

The Commanders will host the other Texas Tech pass rusher, Romello Height, for a pre-draft visit.

The 6-foot-3, 239-pound Height was outstanding for the Red Raiders' top-ranked defense last fall. He finished with 32 tackles, including 10 for loss, nine sacks and two forced fumbles. The first-team All-Big 12 selection ran the 40-yard dash in 4.64 seconds at last month's 2026 NFL combine.

Height is expected to go sometime on Day 2 of the draft. Will he make it to No. 71 when the Commanders go on the clock for the second time?

Here's NFL.com's Lance Zierlein's scouting report on Height:

An edge defender with a lean, angular frame, Height will need a heavy dose of weight-room work to compete at the pro level. His rush is fast and relentless. He uses long strides to challenge at the top and can leap inside the protection. However, his lack of play strength and contact balance allow blockers to bounce him around. Height needs to improve his skill level and refine his approach if he’s going to make an impact as a designated pass rusher, but he has the talent to cause some chaos in the pocket.

Height fits the profile of what Washington head coach Dan Quinn has liked in edge rushers throughout the course of his coaching career.
