Indian Railways is undergoing unprecedented expansion and modernization, supported by a record budgetary allocation of approximately ₹ 2.78 lakh crore in the Union Budget 2026–27. During the discussion on Demands for Grants (2026–27) in Parliament, Ashwini Vaishnav, Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, informed the Lok Sabha about the progress of major infrastructure projects and strengthening of suburban rail services benefiting all states in the country and described the transformation of Indian Railways as a shift from “slow growth” to “super-fast transformation” , signaling the beginning of a new era in the national transport system.

According to a press release issued by the Public Relations Department of Western Railway, the Minister stated that 238 new suburban trains are currently under construction to strengthen the Mumbai suburban network. These trains will be equipped with automatic door closing systems to enhance passenger safety and convenience. He also informed that the government is providing a subsidy of approximately ₹3,000 crore for Mumbai suburban services. Overall, Indian Railways provides a subsidy of approximately 45% per passenger, providing affordable travel to the general public.

Highlighting the progress of the Mumbai - Ahmedabad High - Speed ​​Rail Project, the Minister informed that the project is progressing rapidly and several important milestones have been achieved. More than 300 km of viaduct construction, 435 km of foundation work, 338 km of girder launching, and 426 pier construction have been completed. Additionally, 168 km of track has been laid and 146 km of overhead equipment (OHE) masts have been installed. Work on India's first undersea rail tunnel is progressing. Work is progressing rapidly at major stations including Ahmedabad, Sabarmati, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, and Bandra Kurla Complex.

The Minister further stated that major infrastructure projects, such as new line construction, electrification, and station redevelopment, are being implemented at an unprecedented pace. Bridges across major rivers have been completed, and work is progressing rapidly in areas such as Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand , Nadiad , Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

He also informed that surveys are being conducted to enhance rail connectivity in border areas, particularly the Kutch region, including the Deshalpar to Hajipir and Vayor to Lakhpat sections. These initiatives are expected to improve regional connectivity, increase employment opportunities, and provide safer, faster, and more comfortable travel for passengers.
